Full Circle at Upper Space

By Sam July 31, 2008.

Upper Space supported by Carhartt have lined up 30 of the North West’s best graffiti writers for your chance to witness them painting live outside the gallery and onto the warehouse as they raise awareness to the fact that the council provides no legal walls for artists to practice on and develop their styles in the city centre.

As more graffiti writers are getting arrested for their art we invite you to show support for the cause and watch many of the artists who are exhibiting in the gallery paint live over the course of the weekend.

Running from 15th-17th August ‘Full Circle’ will be showcasing live Manchester hip hop acts, turntablists, MC’s and break dancers in the gallery space and cafe area as they showcase their skills to the public. Expect some very special guests…….

Pier Pressure opens today at the Maverick Showroom. Make sure you take time to check it out!!

The work of Dominic Allan, Jimmy Conway-Dyer & Peter Lamb echoes the forced entertainment of the seaside pier and how it is consumed and used to escape the pressures of everyday life…

Sirens…

By Sam July 25, 2008.

As well as the addition of Mr. Spar’s work to Manchester Store, we also have the “Sirens” Exhibition by StavinArtist…

Here is a little bit about what “Sirens” is about:

I am fascinated with how the physical world has been depicted and explained through the imagination. Especially in relation to the creation of fables and legends through the ages that have brought us so many iconic figures… later re-envisioned within stories, artwork and film.

When I began as starvinartist I borrowed from this tradition to explain my services within a metaphor… being able to discover, develop and create a customers Siren… as in the fabulous creature from Greek Mythology that turn a persons head.

By 2007 my practice had developed and I had stopped referring to my style in these means, but became focused on producing work around the theme. Naturally developing a small network of models and a body of work that depicted them as modern-day Sirens. Much more inline with the seductresses that Odysseus (Odyssey) and Jason (Argonautica) came across.

As written in the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci… “The siren sings so sweetly that she lulls the mariners to sleep; then she climbs upon the ships and kills the sleeping mariners.” Similarly this selection of pieces have dark sexual and carnivorous undertones…

Get down to the store and check it out for yourself…
